Bethany Hanman (she/her)
Registered Psychotherapist
I am a Registered Psychotherapist with the College of Registered Psychotherapists (CRPO). I completed a BA in Psychology at the University of Waterloo, a Post-Graduate Certificate in Addictions and Mental Health at Humber College and an MA in Psychotherapy at Wilfrid Laurier University. As a life-long learner, I regularly engage in training and workshops to acknowledge the shifts and changes in research surrounding psychotherapeutic practice.
I primarily work with adults ages 18 to 40 who notice childhood trauma responses surfacing in their present lives or feel stuck in long-standing patterns of thought. For me, therapy goes beyond identifying these patterns; it’s about understanding where they began, why they developed and how they may no longer serve you. I often support clients who have previous therapy experience and are ready to explore the deeper “why” behind persistent patterns of thought. Many of the individuals I work with are navigating the impact of narcissistic abuse, challenging relationships, unresolved childhood trauma and ongoing anxiety/rumination.
I use an eclectic approach, grounded in Internal Family Systems, Narrative Therapy, and Existential Therapy. We may begin with Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, as an entry point to understanding our thoughts and feelings, and then move into another model of therapy. I use a trauma-informed lens to help us understand how past behaviours can teach us to better align with our present and future goals.
Starting with a therapist can feel intimidating, so it's important that you feel a sense of connection and comfort with your therapist. I believe in taking the time to explore what makes you feel most like you; what brings joy, what feels heavy and everything in between. My sessions are often filled with laughter, swearing and iced coffee, even in winter.
I am a huge fan of my cat, Tiff, who spends most of her time making sure I do not oversleep. I love to spend time with friends, especially with those who value reality TV as much as I do. I stay active by attending exercise classes, enjoying community events and crafting non-stop when I am not at New Moon!
