Frequently Asked Questions

Most health benefit plans cover the majority of our services. Please check with your provider or work to find out what your plan covers. For Employee Assistance Plan (EAP) or employee Benefits, it is important to confirm with your work or insurance provider what credentials they require in a therapist before your first session. Here are some questions you may want to ask your provider:
1) What credentials are requirements for the therapist, and do I have coverage for counselling with a Registered Social Worker or Psychotherapist? 2) What is my allowable coverage per session, per person, per year?
Even if you do not have coverage, the receipts are still useful for income tax purposes. Since September 26, 2012, counselling services provided by a Registered Social Worker (RSW) may be claimed as a medical expense when filing your income tax return. You may find more information here.

We are aware that not everyone has extended health benefits; which is why we offer reduced-fee services with our Social Work Interns. Our students are completing their Masters of Social Work at Wilfrid Laurier University, and with Clinical Supervision, and guidance with their caseloads, they offer quality care.
Our NMC therapists may also offer reduced-rate services at the individual counsellor’s discretion. Reduced fee services are available on a limited basis and vary based on the clinician you are seeing. Please contact us for more information. Local subsidized counselling agencies that may offer a sliding scale fee include: Camino Wellbeing, Starling Community Services, Porchlight Counselling and Addictions Services, Perth Huron Family Services. Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) or Narcotics Anonymous (NA), are free support groups with regular meetings, for those who struggle with addiction.

With adequate notice, NMC can accommodate your desired change and offer the time slot to another client. We understand that emergencies and extenuating circumstances happen. No, in Ontario only medical doctors, psychologists and psychiatrists can make a mental health diagnosis. For prescribing medication only doctors and psychiatrists can prescribe medication and are covered by OHIP. If you have questions about receiving a diagnosis or starting medication, we recommend asking your family doctor or visiting a walk-in clinic/on campus health team as a first step.

The length of therapy depends on your goals for seeking therapy and on your personal circumstances. Your therapist may recommend starting with weekly or bi-weekly to build the therapeutic relationship. From there clients can move to 3 to 6 weeks, and as needed basis.
Healing is not linear. While some counselling goals can be addressed through brief therapy interventions, some more complex therapeutic goals will require more in-depth work and long term counselling.
