ADHD & Neurodivergence Therapy in Waterloo & Online Across Ontario
Understand yourself, embrace what makes you you, and find ways to thrive on your own terms.
Have you ever felt like you're working harder than others to keep up, trying to fit in, or wondering why everyday tasks feel so challenging? Perhaps you're recognizing neurodivergent traits in yourself or making sense of a recent diagnosis.
Neurodivergence can shape how you experience relationships, daily life, and mental health. Anxiety, depression, burnout, and low self-esteem can sometimes overlap with neurodivergent experiences, including ADHD.
At New Moon Counselling (NMC), we offer neurodiversity-affirming therapy for adolescents and adults to better understand themselves, navigate challenges, and find strategies that work for them. We don't provide diagnostic assessments, but you don't need a formal diagnosis to receive support.
We offer in-person counselling in Waterloo and virtual therapy throughout Ontario.
Neurodivergence can influence how you think, process information, experience emotions, connect with others, and navigate everyday life. You might have understood these differences for years, or you may only recently be finding language that helps explain your experiences.
You might find yourself:
Feeling like you have to work harder than others to navigate social situations or everyday expectations.
Masking your natural responses, rehearsing conversations, or carefully monitoring how you behave to fit in.
Feeling exhausted after social interactions, even when you've enjoyed spending time with others.
Experiencing burnout from trying to keep up with work, school, relationships, or daily responsibilities.
Struggling with emotional regulation, sensory overwhelm, or feeling like your emotions become intense very quickly.
Finding it difficult to get started on tasks, manage time, organize responsibilities, or follow through on things you want to do.
Feeling misunderstood, out of place, or like you have to explain yourself to others.
Questioning your identity or looking back on past experiences through a new lens.
Struggling with perfectionism, high expectations, or the pressure to live up to your abilities.
How Do You Know If You're Struggling With ADHD & Neurodivergence?
You don't need to relate to every experience on this list, and these experiences alone don't necessarily mean you're neurodivergent. Autism, ADHD, and giftedness can each present differently, and everyone's experience is individual. If you're looking to better understand yourself, navigate daily challenges, or explore what neurodiversity means for you, therapy can offer a space to do that without judgment.

How Can Neurodivergence-Affirming Therapy Help?
Sometimes, the hardest part isn't simply navigating the challenges you experience; it's the feeling that you should be able to handle things differently. You might have spent years trying to meet expectations, pushing through exhaustion, or blaming yourself when strategies that work for other people don't seem to work for you.
Neurodiversity-affirming therapy starts from a different place. Rather than treating your differences as something that needs to be fixed, therapy can help you understand how you experience the world, identify the support you need, and explore ways to make everyday life feel more manageable and authentic.
-
Maybe you've spent years wondering why certain things feel harder for you, or why you've always felt a little different. Therapy can help you explore your experiences, recognize patterns, and understand how your particular ways of thinking, processing, and interacting with the world may influence your everyday life. You can begin making sense of your experiences without assuming that everything about you needs to change.
-
Masking can involve hiding natural behaviours, copying social cues, rehearsing conversations, or suppressing your needs to fit in. Sometimes, these strategies help you navigate situations where you don't feel understood or accepted. But constantly monitoring yourself can be exhausting. Therapy can help you explore when masking feels useful, when it takes a toll, and how you might feel more comfortable being yourself in relationships and environments where you feel safe.
-
When you've spent a long time pushing through overwhelm, managing expectations, or trying to keep up with daily responsibilities, you may eventually reach a point where your usual strategies no longer feel sustainable. Therapy can help you recognize signs of burnout, explore the demands and expectations contributing to it, and identify ways to adjust routines, boundaries, and supports. The goal isn't to help you push through more; it's to explore what you need to make life more sustainable.
-
overwhelm, unexpected changes, or competing demands can sometimes leave you feeling flooded, frustrated, or shut down. You might also struggle with time management, organization, getting started on tasks, or following through on responsibilities. Therapy can help you recognize patterns, understand your needs, and develop practical strategies that work with the way your brain functions, including finding ways to manage overwhelm, regulate emotions, and navigate everyday demands.
-
Discovering that you may be neurodivergent later in life can bring relief as past experiences begin to make sense, alongside sadness or frustration about the support you didn't receive earlier. If you've spent years feeling like you're too much, not enough, or somehow getting things wrong, therapy can help you explore where these beliefs came from and develop a more compassionate understanding of yourself. You can make sense of your experiences, recognize your strengths, and learn to embrace your needs and differences without feeling like you always have to prove you're doing enough.
-
It can be difficult to explain your needs when you're used to adapting to everyone else's expectations. You might struggle with boundaries, misunderstandings, communication differences, or asking for accommodations. Therapy can help you explore ways to communicate more clearly, recognize what helps you feel supported, and build relationships where your needs and differences are respected.
Neurodivergence Therapy for Teens, and Adults in Waterloo Region & Online Accross Ontario
Neurodivergence can shape how we experience school, work, friendships, family relationships, and our sense of identity. The challenges and questions that arise can also change as we move through different stages of life. At NMC, our therapists work collaboratively with adolescents and adults to understand their experiences and identify support that fits their individual needs.
Adolescents: Navigating friendships, school expectations, changing identities, and growing independence can be demanding. Neurodivergent teens may feel misunderstood, struggle with social pressures, experience sensory or emotional overwhelm, or feel exhausted from trying to fit in. Therapy offers a space to better understand themselves, build self-advocacy and coping skills, and explore what helps them feel supported without pressure to hide who they are.
Adults: You may have spent years adapting to expectations, managing responsibilities, or trying to understand why certain aspects of life feel more difficult than they seem for others. Perhaps a recent diagnosis or realization has helped you connect the dots, or you're still exploring what fits your experiences. Therapy can help you make sense of your history, navigate burnout, develop sustainable routines, strengthen relationships, and build a life that better reflects your needs, values, and strengths.
At New Moon Counselling, we take a neurodiversity-affirming approach that recognizes there is no single way to think, learn, communicate, or experience the world. Our therapists work with you to understand your experiences, identify the challenges you'd like support with, and build on your existing strengths. Depending on your needs and your therapist's training, sessions may draw from approaches such as Internal Family Systems (IFS), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Narrative Therapy, and other individualized strategies. Together, we can explore masking, emotional regulation, burnout, identity, boundaries, and self-acceptance while finding practical ways to navigate everyday life. The focus isn't on making you fit a particular mould; it's on helping you understand yourself and find ways of living that feel more sustainable and authentic to you.
You Don't Have to Figure it All Our on Your Own
Whether you've had a diagnosis for years, are beginning to explore the possibility of being neurodivergent, or are trying to make sense of experiences that have followed you throughout your life, you deserve a space where you feel heard and understood.
You don't need to arrive with all the answers or know exactly what you want to work on. At NMC, our therapists can help you explore your experiences, recognize what you need, and find ways to move forward that respect who you are.
