Our Trauma Therapists
How Trauma Therapy Can Help
-
Sometimes, we don't fully recognize how past experiences have shaped the way we think, feel, or respond to the world. Together, we can explore these connections with curiosity and compassion, helping you make sense of your reactions without blaming yourself for them. Understanding why certain patterns developed can be an important step toward finding new ways of responding.
-
Trauma can affect more than our thoughts and emotions; it can influence how our bodies respond to situations that feel threatening or overwhelming. You might notice muscle tension, a racing heart, restlessness, or a feeling of shutting down. Therapy can help you recognize these responses, understand your body's signals, and explore grounding and regulation strategies that help you feel more present and connected to the here and now.
-
Sometimes, memories or reminders of past experiences can continue to bring up intense emotions, fear, shame, or distress. Depending on your needs and your therapist's training, therapy may help you process these experiences so they feel less overwhelming. You don't have to revisit everything at once, and your therapist will work with you to determine what feels appropriate and when you're ready.
-
When you've experienced hurt, unpredictability, or situations where your boundaries weren't respected, it can be difficult to feel safe with others or trust your own judgment. Therapy can provide a consistent space to explore these experiences, better understand your needs, and gradually build confidence in your ability to recognize what feels safe and healthy for you.
-
Past experiences can influence how we connect with others today. You might find yourself people-pleasing, avoiding conflict, struggling to set boundaries, or expecting others to let you down. These responses may have developed as ways of coping with difficult situations. Therapy can help you understand these patterns without judgment and explore new ways of communicating, connecting, and protecting your well-being.
-
Trauma can leave you questioning yourself or feeling responsible for things that happened to you. You might judge yourself for how you reacted, wonder why you're still struggling, or feel frustrated that you haven't moved on. In therapy, you can begin to explore these feelings with greater compassion and recognize that your responses developed in the context of your experiences. You deserve support, not blame, for what you've been through.
-
Sometimes, getting through difficult experiences means putting your own needs, feelings, or interests aside. Over time, you might feel disconnected from who you are or what matters to you. Therapy can help you reconnect with your strengths, values, boundaries, and sense of identity, so that your past experiences can become part of your story without defining your entire future.
Difficult experiences can continue to affect us long after they're over. You might know you're safe but still feel on edge, or find yourself pushing difficult emotions aside to get through the day.
Trauma therapy can help you understand these responses and how past experiences affect your present. Together, we'll work at a pace that feels comfortable for you, without pressure to share more than you're ready for.
Trauma Therapy for Children, Teens, and Adults in Waterloo & Online Accross Ontario
Trauma can affect people at any age, but how it shows up may depend on their developmental stage, experiences, and support system. At NMC, our therapists consider each person's individual needs and provide a space where they feel heard, respected, and supported.
Children: Children may not have the words to explain what they've experienced or how they're feeling. Instead, distress may show up through behavioural changes, emotional outbursts, sleep difficulties, separation worries, or challenges at school. Therapy can help children express their feelings, develop coping skills, and build a greater sense of safety. Parent or caregiver involvement may also be helpful depending on the child's needs.
Teens: Difficult experiences can affect how teens see themselves, navigate friendships, build trust, and manage their emotions. They may withdraw, feel constantly on edge, or struggle with relationships. Therapy offers a supportive, non-judgmental space to explore their experiences, develop coping strategies, and feel more confident and connected.
Adults: Trauma can continue to affect relationships, boundaries, self-esteem, and feelings of safety long after an experience has passed. You might feel constantly on guard, struggle to trust others, or notice strong reactions you don't fully understand. Therapy can help you explore these patterns, process difficult experiences when appropriate, and develop healthier ways of relating to yourself and others.
How We Approach Trauma at NMC
At New Moon Counselling, we understand that healing looks different for everyone. Our therapists take an individualized, trauma-informed approach, helping you explore how past experiences may be affecting your thoughts, emotions, relationships, and responses to stress. Depending on your needs and your therapist's training, therapy may incorporate approaches such as Internal Family Systems (IFS), EMDR or other trauma-informed approaches.
You don't have to stay stuck in patterns that no longer serve you. With the right support, you can begin to better understand yourself, build on your strengths, and discover new ways to navigate difficult emotions and experiences.
We'll work together at a pace that feels right for you, helping you move toward greater confidence, connection, and a stronger sense of safety in your everyday life.
